A New Collaboration on Stage
With Aerosmith’s future uncertain after Steven Tyler’s larynx injury, guitarist Joe Perry is keeping the music alive. A new version of the Joe Perry Project — featuring fellow Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford, Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, and Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo — began their first tour Wednesday at the Hard Rock Event Center in Tampa, Florida.
The show focused on Aerosmith staples like “Same Old Song and Dance,” “Mama Kin,” “Last Child,” and “Draw the Line.” It also included Black Crowes favorites “Twice as Hard” and “Jealous Again,” along with Stone Temple Pilots tracks “Vasoline” and “Interstate Love Song.” STP drummer Eric Kretz was originally set to join but had to leave due to a “family emergency.” His spot was filled by Joe Perry Project drummer Jason Sutter. Touring Aerosmith keyboardist Buck Johnson rounded out the lineup.

Blending Styles and Sounds
Their take on “Interstate Love Song” gave a fresh twist to the well-known hit. Slowing the tempo and adding bluesy touches, the band allowed each member time to shine. “I think you know this one,” Robinson told the crowd before the performance. “From the mind of Mr. Robert DeLeo.” For the Aerosmith tracks, they stayed close to the original style, saving “Walk This Way” as the show’s finale.
At the moment, the Joe Perry Project has 10 scheduled performances. The tour wraps with an opening slot for The Who at the Hollywood Bowl on September 17. Afterward, Robinson will return to the Black Crowes, while DeLeo has upcoming shows with Stone Temple Pilots.
Aerosmith’s Uncertain Future
Aerosmith has been off the road since Tyler’s injury cut short the band’s 2023 Peace Out… Farewell Tour after only three shows. Tyler was healthy enough by February to join Perry for several songs at a Los Angeles benefit for his charity Janie’s Fund.
In July, Tyler performed “Walk This Way” and “Train Kept A-Rollin’” at Black Sabbath’s Back to the Beginning concert, showing no signs of lasting vocal damage. These appearances have given fans hope that Aerosmith might return in some capacity.
